Erase and Rewind

I wonder why?
Your old telephone number, the nameplate of the car you saw everyday - though not yours, the name of your puppy love - though you cant recollect the face, the address of the girl/guy you once hit upon - though you never visited her/his place, the name & habbits of the professor you condemned always, the lyrics of any movie song, the date you first met your love/enemy, the nastiest fight you've had, ... are all so difficult to forget. How much ever you try, you cant seem to erase few things off your memory; they may be trivias. Noone taught you those, noone asked you to memorize those nor was it a part of any study lesson. These seem inevitable, cant seem to get rid off them; these just become an indispensable part of your gray matter. Makes me wonder; still doesnt fail to bewilder me!

As a kid I used to hate poetries, yes I'm saying that ;) However, till today I remember every word of this poem which was on the last page of my Hindi textbook in the 5th grade. Can still sing it with the tune :-P
Ae matru bhoomi teri
jay ho sadaa vijay ho,
tere prashast nabh mein
sukh surya ka uday ho.
Nij prem ki kiran se
manko jagaa de mere,
peeche na pair daalu
chahe maha pralay ho.
Tujhko prasanna dekhu
bas laalsa yehi hai,
fir godd mein hi teri
mera shareer lay ho.

I love this poem... when I narrate those words, makes me feel proud, a proud Indian! Thats what I love about it. It shall be in my mind, my heart forever.

Thats what the human mind is all about ... keeping an unerasable record of the experiences and learnings from them ... and on top of that .. retriving them at unbelievable speeds.

Hats off to the engineer? designer? who created the human mind. even the combined power of all living beings and machines on this earth havent been able to even match a fraction of that.

yup, 66****7 ... 11 years, still remember !!

the professor you condemned always... or the professor you loved !!

the nastiest fight you've had... or the fun you had!

It's just the memory lane I travelled reading those lines!!

Its all a simple theory. the human being is very self-centered - You only remember stuff that is important to you. These, being some of the memories that defined your life, are the things that you will never forget.

Even the simple thing of, say, going to the market and getting a can of milk...you may forget to do so, unless you are the one who absolutely needs to have that cup of tea everyday

hey Sal...good one ...memory is indeed a big surprise to lot of cognitive scientists. It is in good shape when you least expect it and forgetting leaves you in the lurch when you least want it.
However it is all about associations. No matter how minute the details are if you associate them well, you will always remember them forever....Think of thousands of hindi songs we know by heart or formulae or stuff like which you do not use that often but it stays with you...and a little tidbit since we are talking about remebering fights and stuff....In general the human mind remembers negative or unpleasant instances quicker than positive ones......ironical but true......

@green eyed goblin: Who can explain this better than a cognitive scientist ;)

I completely agree abt the positive & negatives. If asked to enlist the best day(s) of your life, u'll have to think since u've had n of them. But if u were asked abt ur nastiest fight(s), you can enumerate them immediately, count them on ur finger tips :) Ironical but true...

Yup.... sometimes u seem to remember the stupidest things clearly and cannot remember some important things at all !!!

Memory is like a child walking on a sea-shore ..... u never know what small pebble it may pick up and keep it amongst its treasured things !

For me, I have vague but fond memories as a kid .. roaming in the village when I was a kid .. juhu beach .. daily trips to lions garden (santacruz).. i guess it all helps us relate things .. These memories become the trailing part of "This reminds me of ... " statements :)

And then there is this feeling of deja-vu that we get that just hints us that we have been in this situation before / seen this person somewhere .. all very exciting but difficult to explain

@vivek: Its those days we cherish/detest most, that we r reminded of again & again & again...

And Devaju is always there, the feeling of "been there, done that". But I guess thats different from this!
